Ignite students win at The Big Bang Competition
On Wednesday, the 17th of June, one of Liverpool Life Sciences UTC and The Studio School projects shortlisted for the Big Bang Competition final were invited to showcase their project at the national level at the Big Bang Fair. The students Olivia, Emilia and Willow presented their project ‘Cool Comfort’ to a large audience made up of school children, teachers, STEM ambassadors and industry leaders. They presented their projects exceptionally well, and we couldn’t be prouder.
The Cool Comfort project is a novel product that supports women going through menopause as it works to alleviate symptoms. Our students originally developed the idea in their All about Stem Unilever Inspire Programme, and they then really took off from there in terms of producing different formulas and developing samples.
This topic is largely ignored, and in most cases, women who are suffering simply need to deal with it. Our students saw this and wanted to make a difference.
This was noted by many at Big Bang, and they were widely impressed. So impressed it seems that members of staff at Big Bang and Engineering UK came specifically to get samples!
Walking to the stage with the biggest smiles of the year, Emilia, Willow and Olivia were rightly proud and over the moon. Very well done to the girls for winning the Junior Science award for 2025 - Click here to meet the contestants and winners of The Big Bang Competition 2025.

Fungi Photoshop Workshop
Selected students from Ignite enjoyed a workshop where they put their artistic spin on Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images of fungi in order to provide a video backdrop for a fungi-inspired performance piece in the future.
Many thanks to Miss. Cameron, who ran the session, National History Museum, Hitachi, IRIS, Royal Microscopical Society (RMS) and the Academy for Live Technologies (ALT).

Year 11 Leavers' Assembly and Shirt Signing
As Year 11 students complete their final GCSE exams, a celebration of all they have achieved was organised this week. In a time-honoured tradition, shirts were signed with farewell and good luck messages by students and staff members, and a final farewell video with interviews of teaching staff and student cohort alike was presented in the cinema. A hot food buffet was provided by the fantastic catering staff.
It was a morning full of smiles, congratulations and community spirit (along with a few farewell tears). Congratulations Year 11 leavers 2025 and enjoy a well-earned break!

Alfred H Knight Honours Students and Champions STEM Careers
In May, Alfred H Knight visited Liverpool Life Sciences UTC to present awards to students who successfully completed a challenge held during a previous visit to their headquarters.
Back in November, they organised a dedicated event aimed at showcasing the variety of careers within their sector. This initiative was tailored to help students gain a better understanding of the industry, including the apprenticeship and graduate pathways they offer. It also gave them a taste of what it’s like to work at AHK after completing their studies.
Students participated in a quiz focused on “Lab Metalytics.” Those who answered correctly were recognised with an Alfred H Knight Achievement of Excellence award and earned a one-week placement in their XRF Department. Our students should be beyond proud of themselves for this brilliant achievement!

Alumni Student Tommy visited Liverpool Life Sciences UTC
This week, we welcomed Tommy back into our state-of-the-art facilities. Tommy studied with us for Sixth Form and on results day in August 2024 received an A in Biology and Maths, and a B in Chemistry, as well as an incredible UCAT score of over 2800, which was the top 5% in the country! Tommy decided to take a gap year but has since secured a place at The University of Sheffield to study medicine.
Tommy, like all of our incredible alumni students, is a credit to Liverpool Life Sciences UTC, and we’re so very proud of everything they have all achieved. Tommy, we wish you the best of luck for your incredible future!

Merseyside Young Life Science and Health and Life Scientists (MYHLS)
Ignite MYHLS students, Liam, Bako, Olivia, Emilia, Ingrid, and Olivia, attended The University of Liverpool for the day and participated in workshops and talks relevant to their chosen pathway. This is the start of a relationship which these students will have with Liverpool University right the way through to the end of Year 11.
Merseyside Young Health and Life Scientists (MYHLS) is a rolling three-year programme of health-related activities and support for young people in Years 9-11, who have the potential and interest in studying health and life sciences at University.
Programme aims:
- Increase pupil confidence, motivation and aspirations.
- Develop pupils' understanding of the subject qualification choices needed for health and life sciences studies and careers.
- Provide curriculum enrichment to stretch skills, abilities and understanding.
- Familiarise pupils with the faculty, the university and the campus.
- Enhance pupil knowledge by visiting real-life HLS settings such as a local hospital, veterinary practice or laboratories.
- Support pupils to make informed choices and decisions.
This is an exciting opportunity for our students, and we are looking forward to seeing what's in store for them next!

Engineering Museum Trip
A group of Year 10 engineering students were rewarded for their hard work this year with a visit to the National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port. We attended an event to promote sustainability in maritime engineering, where we heard some informative talks about the future of commercial shipping and chatted to employers in this sector. We watched the finals of “Float your Boat,” where sixth form colleges were competing to build a sustainable craft to sail across the marina, and we enjoyed a lovely buffet lunch with many eminent guests, including three lord mayors!
But the highlight of the trip was going on board The Danny, the only remaining steamboat built on the Mersey still afloat. The Danny was so interesting, with an engine room driven by coal, a traditional steam whistle and a sumptuous art deco lounge. Dr. Mitchell's favourite thing on the steamboat was the steam-powered power steering! We had a lovely day, learnt a lot about the past and future of merchant shipping and will be keeping in touch with the people we met on the day. Watch this space for news of how we will work with them in the future!

Roscoe Primary First Aid Session
On the 11th of June, we welcomed Year 2 students from Roscoe Primary School for a teddy bear first aid session. The students all brought their teddies so they could take part. We went through what they should do if someone is hurt.
Due to the age of the students, this session heavily prioritised their understanding of where they are at the time of an incident, encouraging them to learn their address if they didn't already, as that is vital information for emergency services.
Many of the students were very knowledgeable, already being able to share that they knew how to do CPR and the recovery position as well. The students were extremely enthusiastic and all helped their teddies get better before heading back to their school.
Sickness procedure
From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students are not to contact home themselves when they are unwell, staff will call parents if needed.

A Guide to the 2026 Changes to the UCAS Personal Statement
The UCAS personal statement for admission to UK universities will be in a different format for autumn 2026 admissions.
What are the changes, and what will they mean for students?
Instead of a free-text box allowing students to write a maximum of 4,000 characters, the statement will be divided into three sections, each requiring students to respond to a prompt question.
The new questions
The three questions students will now answer are:
- Why do you want to cover this course or subject?
- How have your qualifications or studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?
- What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
Click here to find out more.
