Student success story: Laiken’s Journey to The Mason Foundation and JP Morgan

Computer Science student Laiken celebrated receiving a full offer for a degree apprenticeship at J.P. Morgan, Laiken has also been given role as youth ambassador at the Mason Foundation one of 2 roles given in the whole of the North West after impressing the team with her Youth Engagement Strategy.

Student Ambassador for The Mason Foundation

Laiken has recently been appointed as Youth Ambassador for The Mason Foundation - one of only two roles given across the entire North West of England. Her achievement of this role reflects both her leadership qualities and her ability to engage meaningfully with her community.

“We are thrilled to welcome Laiken to our Youth Ambassador Team at The Mason Foundation. Her exceptional communication skills, and proven leadership abilities, demonstrated through her achievements in cybersecurity competitions, make her an outstanding addition to our Youth Ambassador Team. Laiken's thoughtful approach to youth engagement, particularly her insights on utilising social media effectively and reaching underrepresented communities, aligns perfectly with our mission. Her people skills and work ethic will undoubtedly help us connect with more young people across the North West to create a Youth Panel ensuring we are listening to their voices, which will help shape our work. We look forward to working with Laiken on this exciting project." — Rosie Whitehead, Head of Operations and Engagement, The Mason Foundation

Laiken's Student Engagement Strategy

As part of her application, Laiken presented a detailed Youth Engagement Strategy in which she explored the reasons why only 17% of young people (aged 11–30) in the UK currently engage in volunteering or fundraising. She identified key barriers - including lack of awareness, scepticism, and low confidence - and proposed innovative solutions:

“To engage young people, you need to be present in their spaces. Social media channels - especially TikTok - are your biggest ally.”

Laiken’s presentation reflected not only a clear understanding of youth culture but also her natural strengths in people skills, technical knowledge, and a strong work ethic - all of which she brings to this new ambassadorial role.

A New Opportunity at J.P. Morgan

Since giving her presentation, Laiken has received even more exciting news: she has been offered a place on the JP Morgan Technology Degree Apprenticeship.

This apprenticeship is a fantastic opportunity, combining university study with real-world work experience at one of the world’s leading financial and technology companies.

We are incredibly proud of Laiken and all that she has achieved so far. We wish her the very best in her role with The Mason Foundation and her exciting future with J.P. Morgan.
